San Marcos is a larger medium-sized city located in the state of California. With a population of 89,387 people and 14 constituent neighborhoods, San Marcos is the 88th largest community in California.

Housing costs in San Marcos are among some of the highest in the nation, although real estate prices here don't compare to real estate prices in the most expensive communities in California.

Unlike some cities where white-collar or blue-collar occupations dominate the local economy, San Marcos is neither predominantly one nor the other. Instead, it has a mixed workforce of both white- and blue-collar jobs. Overall, San Marcos is a city of sales and office workers, professionals and service providers. There are especially a lot of people living in San Marcos who work in sales jobs (12.88%), office and administrative support (12.02%) and management occupations (10.19%).

Also of interest is that San Marcos has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

The overall education level of San Marcos citizens is substantially higher than the typical US community, as 29.47% of adults in San Marcos have at least a bachelor's degree, and the average American community has 21.84%.

The per capita income in San Marcos in 2010 was $24,826, which is middle income relative to California, and upper middle income relative to the rest of the US. This equates to an annual income of $99,304 for a family of four. However, San Marcos contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

San Marcos is an extremely ethnically-diverse city. The people who call San Marcos home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of San Marcos residents report their race to be White, followed by Asian. San Marcos also has a sizeable Hispanic population (people of Hispanic origin can be of any race). People of Hispanic or Latino origin account for 36.64% of the city’s residents. Important ancestries of people in San Marcos include English, German, Irish and Italian.

San Marcos also has a high percentage of its population that was born in another country: 23.70%.

The most common language spoken in San Marcos is English. Some people also speak Spanish.
